# Cyclone Alfred: What You Need to Know About Your Solar and Battery System

As Queensland and northern New South Wales recover from Cyclone Alfred, many homeowners are asking the same questions—was my solar system affected? What should I do now? At Halcol Energy, we want to make sure our customers have the right information to protect their solar and battery systems before, during, and after extreme weather events.

Here’s what you need to know about managing your solar power system during a cyclone and what to do if your system has sustained damage.

## Should I Turn My Solar System Off Before a Cyclone?

One of the most common pieces of advice given before a storm is to turn off your solar system. But is this really necessary?

If your system is grid-connected (without a battery), your inverter is designed to automatically shut down if the grid goes down. There is no need to manually turn it off unless advised by a professional.

If your system has a battery, check whether your backup mode is enabled. This ensures your home continues receiving power even if the grid goes offline.

If you feel more comfortable turning off your system, follow the shutdown procedure located on the front of your inverter or in your handover documents.

## What Happens to My Solar Panels During a Cyclone?

Solar panels are designed to withstand high winds, but in extreme conditions, they can be damaged. If you suspect your solar panels have been impacted:

Do NOT attempt to remove or touch fallen panels – they may still be generating electricity.
Contact Halcol Energy immediately – we can safely assess your system and advise on the next steps.
Stay away from any exposed wiring – if a panel is loose or has come off your roof, it could still be live.

In most cases, a properly installed solar system will remain intact even during a major storm. Our installations are designed to comply with Australian standards for extreme weather resistance.

## If You Have a Battery, Follow These Steps

A home battery storage system can provide backup power during blackouts—but only if it’s charged and ready before the cyclone hits.

Set your battery to “Backup Mode” – If your system allows, change your settings to reserve 100% battery power before a storm.
Turn off any Virtual Power Plant (VPP) agreements – Some programs may automatically drain your battery by feeding energy back to the grid.
Test your backup function – If possible, simulate a grid outage to ensure your system is properly set up for blackout conditions.

Different battery brands have their own processes for preparing for a cyclone. Tesla Powerwall users can enable “Stormwatch” mode, which automatically prioritises charging when severe weather is forecasted. For SolarEdge, Sungrow, Sigenergy, and SonnenBatterie systems, check your app settings or contact Halcol Energy for assistance.

## What to Do If Your Solar System Has Been Damaged

If your area was hit hard by Cyclone Alfred, your solar system may have been affected. Here’s what you should do:

Inspect from a safe distance – Look for visible damage, such as broken panels, dislodged components, or damaged roof mounts.
Do NOT attempt DIY repairs – Solar panels and electrical wiring can be dangerous, even when power is off.
Contact Halcol Energy – We have reserved two full days this week to conduct free storm damage assessments for affected customers. This service is first-come, first-served.
Check for water damage – If your system was submerged or exposed to heavy rain, it should be inspected before being turned back on.

## Lessons for the Future – Be Prepared

Cyclone Alfred is a reminder that severe weather events are becoming more frequent, and proper solar and battery management is key to ensuring safety and reliability.

Steps to take before the next major storm:
Regular solar maintenance – Schedule routine system checks to ensure everything is in top condition.
Backup power planning – If you don’t yet have a battery, consider adding one to your system for increased energy security.
Know your system’s shutdown process – Keep your inverter instructions handy so you can follow the correct procedure when needed.

At Halcol Energy, we’ve built a reputation for reliable, high-quality solar installations that stand up to Queensland’s extreme weather. If you need post-cyclone support, system inspections, or advice on adding a battery backup, we’re here to help.
