As energy bills increase and households look to tighten their belts and save money, it is important that we look at ways of keeping our energy bills down. To do this, a quick DIY Home Energy Audit can help you to spot problems and put them right.

The Queensland winter will soon be with us, so now is the time to prepare!

## Look for drafts

If there is a draft then it means that heat can escape and the cold air can enter. So, it is time to hunt down drafts by looking at those areas where drafts are likely such as doors, windows, plumbing and ceiling fixtures.

## Check roof insulation

Whether it is winter or summer, roof insulation works best when it is in the roof space and so, that is where you need to check. If the insulation is thick enough to protrude over the joists then it is thick enough. If it isn’t then you should look to replace it with new, thicker insulation.

## Stains on insulation

If you notice stains on you insulation then it is likely that you have an air leak behind the insulation in places such as a duct hole or even a crack in an exterior wall. Identify the gaps and seal them where possible.

## Exposed ducts should be inspected

It is important that you look for holes or joints that might be sealed and any heating or ventilation ducts that are not insulated could be worth insulating. If they are not insulated then they can loses as much as 30% of the energy that you use to heat up or cool your home.

Carrying out a DIY audit will make it possible for you to identify problems and put them right before the continue to cost you even more money.
