# Federal Battery Rebate Reaches 500,000 Installations Across Australia

Australia’s home battery boom has reached a major milestone, with more than 500,000 battery systems now installed under the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

Just over a year after the program launched, the milestone demonstrates how quickly battery storage has moved from a relatively niche technology to a mainstream energy solution for Australian households.

For Queensland homeowners with rooftop solar, the message is clear: home batteries are becoming an increasingly important part of the way Australians generate, store and use their own electricity.

## 500,000 Batteries and Counting

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program was introduced to make battery storage more affordable and help households get greater value from their rooftop solar systems.

Take-up has significantly exceeded early expectations.

More than half a million battery systems have now been installed under the program, with current installations continuing at around 2,000 systems per week.

The strong demand reflects a major shift in the Australian solar market. While rooftop solar has been commonplace for years, more households are now looking at how they can store their excess daytime generation rather than simply exporting it to the electricity grid.

## Why Are So Many Australians Adding Batteries?

For households with solar, one of the biggest frustrations can be the difference between what they receive for exporting electricity and what they pay to purchase electricity from the grid later.

A home battery changes that equation.

Instead of exporting all excess solar generation during the middle of the day, a battery can store that energy for use later in the afternoon, evening or overnight.

Depending on the household and system configuration, the benefits can include:

- Using more of your own solar energy
- Reducing electricity purchased from the grid
- Lowering evening electricity costs
- Greater control over household energy usage
- Backup power during outages with appropriately configured systems
- Reducing exposure to future electricity price increases

For many homeowners, solar is no longer just about generating electricity. It’s increasingly about generating, storing and intelligently managing energy throughout the day.

## The Battery Rebate Is Still Available

There has been some confusion about whether homeowners have missed their opportunity to access the Federal Battery Rebate.

The good news is that the program is still operating.

The rebate structure changed from 1 May 2026, with the strongest support now focused on smaller and mid-sized battery systems.

Under the updated structure:

- Batteries from 0-14kWh receive 100% of the applicable STC factor
- Capacity between 14-28kWh receives 60%
- Capacity between 28-50kWh receives 15%

The changes were introduced after exceptionally strong demand for very large residential battery systems during the program’s first year.

Importantly, the program continues to provide substantial assistance towards the upfront cost of eligible battery installations.

## Battery Prices Are Changing Too

The rebate isn’t the only factor influencing the cost of home battery storage.

Competition between manufacturers has intensified significantly, with more brands entering the Australian market and established manufacturers continuing to improve their technology and pricing.

As a result, reductions in manufacturer pricing can help offset some of the changes made to the rebate.

For homeowners, this means it’s important not to compare today’s battery pricing purely against an old rebate figure. The total installed price, usable storage capacity, product quality and suitability for your home are what ultimately matter.

## Batteries Are Helping the Electricity Grid Too

The rapid adoption of household batteries isn’t only benefiting individual homeowners.

Hundreds of thousands of batteries collectively storing excess rooftop solar during the day are also changing the way electricity moves through Australia’s grid.

Even batteries operating independently – without being connected to a Virtual Power Plant – can help reduce daytime solar exports and shift household grid demand away from higher-demand periods.

With half a million systems now operating across Australian homes and businesses, residential battery storage has become a meaningful part of Australia’s wider energy system.

## Choosing the Right Battery Matters

The extraordinary growth in battery installations also makes choosing an experienced installer increasingly important.

The biggest battery isn’t automatically the best battery.

A properly designed system should consider:

- Your existing solar system
- Daytime solar generation
- Evening and overnight electricity consumption
- Current electricity tariffs
- Backup power requirements
- Available installation space
- Future requirements such as EV charging
- Battery capacity and expandability

Correctly sizing the system can make a significant difference to both the upfront investment and long-term value.

## Thinking About Adding a Battery?

With more than 500,000 installations completed under the Federal Government program, home battery storage has well and truly entered the mainstream.

Halcol Energy has been helping Queensland households take control of their electricity costs since 2010 and offers a range of leading battery solutions including Tesla, Sigenergy, Sungrow, GoodWe and SolarEdge.

Whether you already have solar or you’re considering a complete solar and battery system, our team can assess your household energy usage, explain the current rebate and recommend a system suited to your home.

The Federal Battery Rebate is still available, battery technology continues to improve, and there are now more options than ever for Queensland homeowners.
