# Federal Home Battery Rebate Expanded to $7.2bn – What It Means for You

The Australian Government has announced a major expansion of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, increasing the budget from $2.3bn to $7.2bn over the next four years. Alongside this expansion, the rebate structure is being reshaped so the scheme remains sustainable and continues delivering meaningful savings for Queensland households.

If you’re considering a home battery, these updates will influence both rebate amounts and the optimal battery size for your home from 2026 onwards.

### What’s Changing With The Federal Battery Rebate?

The increase in funding is designed to support **more than two million battery installations by 2030**, doubling the original forecast. This rollout is expected to deliver **40 gigawatt hours of storage capacity**, helping Australia manage the transition from coal to renewable energy.

However, from **May 2026**, the rebate will begin declining **twice per year instead of annually**, and at a steeper rate.

For example, the STC factor (which determines the rebate value) will shift as follows:

• January–April 2026: 8.4
 • May–December 2026: 6.8
 • January–June 2027: 5.7
 • July–December 2027: 5.2
 • January–June 2028: 4.6
 • July–December 2028: 4.1
 • January–June 2029: 3.6
 • July–December 2029: 3.1
 • January–June 2030: 2.6
 • July–December 2030: 2.1

The message is clear: the later you install your battery, the lower the rebate will be.

### Why The Scheme Is Being Updated

Industry analysts revealed that the original $2.3bn rebate pool was on track to run out by mid 2026 – barely one year into the proposed four-year budget. The main reason is the sudden surge in average system size. Since October, the typical battery being installed has jumped to around **28kWh**, compared to **10–12kWh** just a year earlier.

Because the rebate pays out per kWh of usable capacity, this trend has dramatically accelerated total program spending.

To protect the longevity of the scheme, the Government is adjusting rebate amounts and incentivising more appropriately sized systems rather than oversized installations.

### Rebate Reductions for Larger Batteries

From May 2026, the rebate will only fully apply to smaller and mid-sized batteries. Larger systems will still qualify, but the rebate will scale down depending on size.

The new rules:

**• 0–14 kWh:** 100% of the STC factor
 • **14–28 kWh:** 60% of the STC factor
 • **28–50 kWh:** 15% of the STC factor

Batteries up to **100 kWh** remain eligible for installation under the program, but rebates will only be issued for the first **50 kWh**.

This change targets the widespread promotion of very large batteries that exceed the needs of most households and often pair poorly with small inverters.

### Industry Response: Supportive and Relieved

The Smart Energy Council has welcomed the changes, particularly because the new rules do not take effect until **May 2026**. This gives installers and customers certainty and protects anyone who has already planned or booked an installation.

### A Strong Boost for Australia’s Renewable Future

Despite the challenges associated with oversized systems, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program has rapidly accelerated battery adoption. Since 1 July, nearly **160,000 home batteries** have been installed across Australia.

Contrary to early assumptions, uptake has been strongest in regional and suburban areas, not inner-city postcodes.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen noted that the program has already exceeded expectations and is helping everyday households play a role in strengthening the national energy grid.

### What This Means for Halcol Energy Customers

For Queensland households thinking about a battery, the next 12–18 months may provide the best value before rebate levels begin their steeper, twice-yearly decline. The upcoming changes also make choosing the right battery size more important than ever.

At Halcol Energy, we can help you select a system that suits your home, maximises your rebate, and delivers the best long-term savings.
