# Six Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Repairing or Replacing

We’re all very reliant on our air conditioners here, as temperatures can climb to uncomfortable and even dangerous heights. Like all household appliances, however, your aircon unit can get old, worn out or develop one of a number of problems. Thankfully, you’ll usually get lots of warning before it goes kaput.

If you notice any of these six signs, you need to call in your technician as soon as possible so that your aircon is always there for you.

## It’s kicking out warm air

The point of your air conditioner is to send out cool air so if you’re suddenly feeling a warm breeze, there’s something wrong. It could be that the compressor is failing or you’re low on freon; it could also be that the whole thing needs to be replaced.

## The airflow is still cool, but it’s weak

If you’re finding that the amount of cool air coming out of your air conditioner just isn’t enough to have an appreciable cooling effect, then there could be a problem with the ducts or your compressor could be on the fritz. Whichever it is, you need your engineer.

## You’re finding water at the bottom of the unit

You shouldn’t be seeing any water in or on the unit and if you’re seeing pools appear at the bottom, then your drain tube may be blocked. This isn’t a huge problem, it’s a simple repair.

However, it could also be a refrigerant leak, which will mean that you have to get a repair or a new unit ASAP. A refrigerant leak can be a health hazard in itself, and damp patches can also easily lead to mould and bacterial growth.

## It’s making strange noises

Your aircon unit will always make some sort of noise and after a while you won’t notice them; if you do start to notice sounds getting louder or hear some unusual ones, then your unit needs to be checked over. Grinding, screeching and knocking noises shouldn’t be happening and could be caused by a slipped belt, loss of lubrication or worn bearings.

## There’s odd smells

An odd smell from any electrical appliance should always be investigated as there may be a fire risk. With an aircon unit, strange smells might also be due to mould and bacterial growth, which also need to be looked at and sorted – stat!

## Your unit is more than 10 years old

Although high-quality aircon units should last for at least 10 years, it won’t last forever and if you’re always having minor issues with your unit and it’s getting on a bit, it’s probably time to say goodbye. You might also notice that your electricity bills are going up for no apparent reason because your aircon unit simply isn’t as efficient as it used to be.
