The sun-bathed state of Queensland is now home to the country’s largest [solar farm](https://halcolenergy.com.au/solar-systems/), generating clean and renewable energy to power homes and businesses across the region. With over one million solar panels installed, the Western Downs Green Power Hub is a shining example of Australia’s commitment to a sustainable future.

## Location and Design

Located in the Western Downs region, about 250km northwest of Brisbane, the Green Power Hub spans over 540 hectares of land, making it one of the largest solar farms in the world. The design of the facility is unique, with more than one million solar panels mounted on a single-axis tracking system that follows the sun’s movement throughout the day, maximizing energy output.

## Capacity and Output

The Western Downs Green Power Hub has a capacity of 460 MWp (megawatt peak), which is equivalent to powering 235,000 homes and displacing 665,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The solar farm is expected to generate over 1.5 million megawatt-hours of clean energy annually, contributing to Australia’s ambitious renewable energy targets.

## Benefits to the Community

Apart from the environmental benefits, the Green Power Hub is providing a significant economic boost to the Western Downs region. The construction of the solar farm created over 400 jobs, and ongoing maintenance and operational roles will provide long-term employment opportunities for the locals. The project has also injected over $500 million into the local economy, benefiting small businesses and community organizations in the region.

## Future Plans and Impact

The completion of the Western Downs Green Power Hub is a significant milestone for the Australian [renewable energy](https://halcolenergy.com.au/contact//) industry, but it is only the beginning of what is possible. The government has set a target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and projects like this will play a crucial role in achieving that goal. As the cost of renewable energy continues to fall and technology improves, we can expect to see more large-scale solar farms and wind turbines popping up across the country.
