Exciting news for Queensland! The Cambridge Solar Farm project, with a capacity of 300 MW, has recently received federal environmental approval. Located approximately 80 km south of Townsville, this ambitious project marks a substantial step forward in Queensland’s renewable energy efforts and is set to power roughly 123,000 homes. The solar farm will not only contribute to a cleaner environment but also provide economic and energy benefits to the region. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with the project slated to become operational by the end of 2026.
The Benefits of the Cambridge Solar Farm
Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Harnessing solar energy, the Cambridge Solar Farm is estimated to offset over 670,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, helping mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Enhanced Energy Security
By adding renewable energy to the grid, Queensland can reduce its dependence on traditional energy sources, strengthening energy security for the entire state and helping stabilise energy prices.
Economic Boost
The AUD 650 million investment in this solar farm will generate an economic uplift through job creation, with around 400 positions expected during the construction phase. This boost will directly support local businesses and stimulate economic growth in surrounding areas.
Environmental Sustainability
Designed with “conservoltaic” principles, the Cambridge Solar Farm will focus on preserving biodiversity, using existing transmission infrastructure to minimise land disturbance and reduce environmental impact.
What This Means for Queensland Residents
The approval of the Cambridge Solar Farm reflects Queensland’s commitment to a sustainable, clean-energy future. For residents, this translates into multiple benefits:
- Cleaner Air: Reduced greenhouse gas emissions will contribute to improved air quality and better public health outcomes.
- Potential Cost Savings: Increased renewable energy generation can help stabilise and potentially lower energy costs by introducing competitive energy sources into the market.
- A Brighter Future: As Queensland advances in renewable energy leadership, it also moves towards a greener, more sustainable environment for future generations.
