When planning for a solar installation in Queensland, you should carefully consider your solar panel positioning.
There are a few general guidelines to consider when installing solar panels in Queensland.
Which direction should solar panels face?
In some cases, the direction of your solar panels is determined by the type of roof you have. Ideally, solar panels should be facing north. This allows you to access the optimal amount of sun for a longer period of time.
As we mentioned though, the position of your home and your style of roof can make it difficult to achieve north-facing solar panels without using mounting brackets. Usually, panels are installed on the slope of your roof, so, for example, an A-frame style roof only gives you two options.
You could use mounting brackets, however, this increases the installation cost quite a bit. If you can’t install your panels facing north, the best alternative is north-west or even north-east.
What angle should they be on?
It might surprise people to know that the correct solar panel positioning is different depending on where you live. The basic rule is the angle of your panels should be the same as the latitude of your location.
So, for installing solar panels in Queensland, your ideal angle is 27.5 degrees. This will provide your solar panels with the most sunlight for the longest period of time. However, if you were in, say, Tasmania, the ideal angle is around 43 degrees, while Darwin’s is only 12 degrees.
Other factors to consider
There are plenty of variables when it comes to solar panel placement. For example, what to do if you have a flat roof. You can certainly have solar panels on a flat roof, but most installers would recommend using mounting brackets to create a more optimal angle.
In addition, you’ll need to consider if shade is going to be an issue. You don’t want shadows creeping across your solar panels during the day, as this will decrease your system’s efficiency.
