In news that will please all Australians who support a shift to renewable energy, Coles is set to announce the signing of final agreements that will help them power all Australian stores with renewable energy by 2025.
Leading the way for renewables
Coles was the first major Australian retailer to fully commit and plot a path towards full renewable energy back in 2019. This week’s development enhances that commitment, with the supermarket giant planning to power all of their stores with renewable energy by mid-2025.
There are over 2500 stores and centres under the Coles banner in this country, which represents an incredible opportunity to reduce carbon emissions throughout the country. The final agreements to be signed will see Coles commit to purchasing renewable energy from projects in NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria. These agreements cover a wide scope, including wind, solar and renewable generator projects.
Together To Zero
The new sustainability strategy announced by Coles has been dubbed ‘Together to Zero’, and includes a vision to achieve zero emissions, zero waste and zero hunger. In addition to the plan to renewable energy purchase agreements in place, Coles is also committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
Interestingly, Woolworths and Aldi have both also announced similar targets, meaning the three largest supermarket chains in the country will be powered by renewable energy in the coming years. This approach is a huge benefit to proponents of renewable energy, as the federal government still lumbers along with unclear and what many people believe to be inadequate emissions reduction targets.
With some of Australia’s major retailers taking the lead, it is hoped that others will follow suit.
